Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located numerous other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
A senior official said the vandalism left him stunned and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
